How to relieve tension in the back
Blissana owner Sophie Nash says we have the power to heal ourselves.
Therapies: Massage, acupuncture, dry needling, cupping, chiropractor
While Sophie specialises in remedial massage, which releases layers of tension held in the muscles and nervous system, she believes the treatment is just one way to relieve tension and combining it with other therapies can be even more effective.
Other treatments to consider are:
Acupuncture: restores balance by stimulating energy points, reducing inflammation and easing tension.
Dry needling: Targets tight, overworked muscles by creating tiny traumas to release physical knots and promote healing.
Cupping: Encourages fresh blood flow and draws out stagnation from deep tissues.
Chiropractor – Realigns the spine and supports better posture and nervous system flow, relieving structural tension and discomfort.
Frequency of treatment
“Start with weekly sessions until you’re pain free - then try every two weeks, then three. Let your body guide the frequency,” Sophie said.
“If pain starts creeping back in week four, then you’ve found your body’s maintenance rhythm - go back to every three weeks.”

Ways of relieving tension in the back.
You know the problem: you’ve been sitting at a desk eight hours a day, five days a week, and your back is now screaming.
We are not designed to be sitting for extended periods of time. While some cannot avoid it in their work, remedial massage therapist and director of Blissana, Sophie Nash, shows people that there are steps to living pain-free.
“I really believe we have the power to heal ourselves - if we’re willing to make lifestyle changes and do the inner work. Changing your lifestyle is solving the problem at its core - and it's the most empowering thing you can do for your health,” she said.
“Our bodies are constantly regenerating - even our bones rebuild. The body holds a blueprint of perfect health and knows how to heal.”
At home treatment: Movement and stretching
One of the best ways to relieve tension in the back is movement, especially movement to music that matches your emotion and allows you to connect with signals in your body.
“Intuitively moving the body to music can be incredibly powerful - we’re moving stuck energy that’s held in our muscles and body,” Sophie said.
Another at-home treatment is stretching and yoga.
Sophie explained that stretching should never feel painful, so to proceed lightly, take deep breaths, and let the muscle relax and lengthen over time.
Clients are encouraged to find their body’s maintenance rhythm.
